What to put in the post

  • List every fix, even the small ones. A pro quotes the visit, and a second fix often rides on the same minimum.
  • Add a photo of each problem. A door that sticks and a door off its hinges are different jobs.
  • Say which floor and whether there is parking. Downtown and Glenwood South posts should say so.
  • Say when: ASAP, within 3 days, or a date.
  • Put your budget in. Pros see it before they call.

What a handyman does, and what needs a licensed trade

North Carolina has no handyman license. It does license electricians and plumbers, at any price.

A handyman can

  • Patch drywall and paint the patch
  • Fix a sticking door, a loose hinge, a lock
  • Hang shelves, mirrors, curtain rods, a TV
  • Swap a faucet or showerhead at the existing connection
  • Caulk a tub, fix a fence board, assemble furniture
  • Plug in and set up an appliance

Needs a licensed trade

  • New wiring, a new outlet or junction box
  • A water heater, moved or resized pipes, gas lines
  • Anything on a project of $40,000 or more

There is no handyman license in North Carolina. A general contractor license is required only when a whole project costs $40,000 or more, up from $30,000 since October 1, 2023 (G.S. 87-1, NC Licensing Board for General Contractors).

Electrical and plumbing work need a trade license at any price. The exceptions a handyman may do: replace lamps and fuses, plug in and service cord-connected appliances, and make minor repairs or part swaps on an installed plumbing system (G.S. 87-43.1 and 87-21).

Repair and installation labor is taxable in North Carolina, so a quote can carry sales tax on top (NC Department of Revenue).
